  • Trusting God's Sovereignty in the Silence: Habakkuk's Faith in the Fray

    Habakkuk 1:1-4

  • Habakkuk’s question: How long and why?

  • Background and context: Who, when and why?

  • BIG IDEA: Even amid apparent inaction, God is sovereign, aware of the injustices we face, and working toward His divine plan, compelling us to trust in His ultimate justice.

  • 2 Chronicles 7:14 (ESV) If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.

Habakkuk 1:1 (ESV) The oracle that Habakkuk the prophet saw.

  • What do we do in the meantime?

  • upon the Lord.

  • Habakkuk 1:2 (ESV) O Lord, how long shall I cry for help and you will not hear? Or cry to you “Violence!” and you will not save?

  • trust in God’s timing.

  • Habakkuk 1:3 (ESV) Why do you make me see iniquity, and why do you idly look at wrong? Destruction and violence are before me; strife and contention arise.

  • Habakkuk 1:4 (ESV) So the law is paralyzed, and justice never goes forth. For the wicked surround the righteous; so justice goes forth perverted.

  • Verde Small Group Discussion Questions

    Break It Out:

    1. What initially grabs your attention in this text? What questions or thoughts arise as you reflect on what it is saying?

    Talk It Out:

    Begin with reading Psalm 51.

    2. Why do you think Habakkuk’s question "Why does evil sometimes seem to thrive?" resonates with many people today? How does this question reflect current events in our own society?

    3. What can we learn from Habakkuk’s identity as a prophet who wrestles with God? How does this shape our understanding of prayer and our relationship with God in times of confusion and despair?

    4. The sermon emphasizes trusting in God's timing even when answers seem delayed. Reflect on a time in your life when you felt God was silent. How did you navigate that period, and what did you learn about faith and patience?

    5. Isaiah 55:8-9 reminds us that God’s ways are not our ways. How can recognizing this truth change our approach to prayer and understanding God’s actions in our lives?

    6. How does Habakkuk's lament serve as a model for us today when we see moral decline in our nation? What specific actions can we take to bear our burdens collectively as a faith community?

    7. God’s word speaks of righteous anger concerning societal injustices. How can we balance this anger with love and compassion in our actions and attitudes toward those who oppose our values?

    8. In what ways can we "cast our burdens upon the Lord"? How can we encourage each other in our faith community to share our struggles and support one another effectively?

    Work It Out:

    9. What action step(s) will you take based on what you’ve learned from God and His word?

    10. How can your growth group pray for you?
