Identity > Selfie - Week 03

Identity > Selfie / Transform / Romans 12:3–8; John 17:13–21
  • Romans 12:1–2 ESV 1 I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. 2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
  • You must constantly evaluate your investment in the surrounding culture so that you don’t conform to its image!
  • the world.
  • John 17:14–19 ESV 14 I have given them your word, and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. 15 I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one. 16 They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. 17 Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. 18 As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. 19 And for their sake I consecrate myself, that they also may be sanctified in truth.
  • The place of the believer in this world is not to retreat from it, but to remain in it and influence it for good.
  • Romans 12:3–8 ESV 3 For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned. 4 For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function, 5 so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. 6 Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; 7 if service, in our serving; the one who teaches, in his teaching; 8 the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in generosity; the one who leads, with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness.
  • Romans 12:3 ESV 3 For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned.
  • We can counter our pride by exercising our gifts, not trying to be somebody we are not.
  • THE WORLD WILL MOLD YOU INTO CONFORMITY…BUT JESUS WILL TRANSFORM YOU INTO YOUR TRUE IDENTITY.

  • Break It Out:

    1. What was one of your worst habits as a kid?

    2. What was your most important takeaway from Sunday's sermon?
  • Talk it Out:

    3. What does it mean to be a living sacrifice?

    4. How does it relate to serving others and being part of a community?

    5. Is all service to others sacrifice? Why or why not?

    6. What is humility? Is it necessary for serving others and being part of a community?

    7. What gifts do you think you offer in service to people around you?

    8. Are there ways in which you are holding back your gifts in service to others?

  • Work It Out:

    9. This week spend the first few moments of the day asking God to renew your mind and set it on the things of God.

    10. How can your small group pray for you? Or is there a prayer request you would like to share with our prayer team? (prayer@verdecc.com)
