Faith that Works - Week 1

Count It All Joy
  • Who is James?

Galatians 2:9 (NLT) James, Peter, and John, who were known as pillars of the church...
  • What is the book about?
  • trials differently
  • James 1:1-2 (ESV) James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, To the 12 Tribes in the Dispersion: Greetings. 2 Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds,
  • with God.
  • James 1:3-4 (ESV) for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. 4 And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.
  • Romans 8:28 (ESV) And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.
  • God for wisdom.
  • James 1:5-8 (ESV) If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. 6 But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. 7 For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; 8 he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.
  • James 1:9-11(ESV) Let the lowly brother boast in his exaltation, 10 and the rich in his humiliation, because like a flower of the grass he will pass away. 11 For the sun rises with its scorching heat and withers the grass; its flower falls, and its beauty perishes. So also will the rich man fade away in the midst of his pursuits.
  • James 1:12 (ESV) Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him.
  • Growth Work Challenge:
Meditate/Memorize: James 1:2 Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds,

Discussion questions: Meet with your small group, a friend or your spouse and talk through the discussion questions.

Faith That Works devotions: Text the keyword DEVO to 928-227-8638 and receive a weekly devotion by Pastor Carl or our pastoral team.
  • Break It Out:

    1. Read James 1:1-12 out loud.
  • 2. What stood out to you, challenged you, or encouraged you from the sermon Sunday?
  • Talk it Out:

    3. How would you define trials?
  • 4. What can you learn from the use of the word “various”?
  • 5. What is the natural reaction to trials?
  • 6. How are believers supposed to react? Why are we to react like this?
  • 7. What is the purpose of trials? What are two possible reactions to trials?
  • 8. How do these test our faith? How does this produce endurance?
  • 9. How does endurance bring is to maturity and make us complete?
  • 10. Share an example of a trial you have faced. What did you learn from it?
  • Work It Out:

    11. How does this passage speak specifically to your life? What will you do as a result?
  • 12. How can your small group pray for you?
  • This field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.
